The seeds for MOmentum Bike Park grew from a Parks Master Planning exercise conducted by the City of Joplin Parks & Recreation Department. We listened to community input regarding the desired future for the Dover Outdoor Recreation Area, which was formerly used for soccer fields.

It became clear that the people of Joplin had a strong desire to host a bike park facility within our parks system. Passage of the Parks & Stormwater Sales Tax put funding in place to begin development of a bike park. Citizens were invited to provide input to shape the features and attractions to be included in the design of the park.

Multiple public meetings were held to discuss the park, showing preliminary plans so we could gather input from local bicycle enthusiasts and riders of both mountain biking and BMX styles.

MOmentum Bike Park offers activities for cyclists at all skill levels, including:

Bicycle Singletrack: an off-road cycling narrow trail wide enough for one bike at a time
BMX Pump Track:a track with rideable features like berms, ramps, and rollers along the trail
- BMX is an abbreviation for Bicycle Motocross and is a sport that involves riding bikes on different terrains and doing tricks
- "Pump" Track is built with rollers, banked turns, and other features so riders can generate their own momentum by up and down body movements or "pumping" instead of pedalling
Children’s Bicycle Playground: offers riding area and trails with various obstacles for children to navigate, which helps them build balance, coordination, and bike handling skills. Kids ride their balance bikes or traditional pedal bikes and build their confidence
Skills Features Area: Provides riders opportunities to learn skills they need before heading out on the challenging terrain or tracks
Bridges: the bike park is built near Turkey Creek and several paths will cross this waterway with distinctive bridges

Crossland Construction Company Inc. is the contractor for the park, and SWT Design completed the design and engineering plans for Joplin’s newest park.
The City of Joplin is also working with Joplin-based American Ramp Company, an international company building Action Sports Parks throughout the world, for their expertise and passion to build an incredible facility in their own community.

Why did Joplin Parks and Recreation build a Bike Park?

For more than ten years, a large contingent of citizens has expressed their desire for a bike park. It was included in Joplin Parks and Recreation’s 2021 Master Plan after citizens responded with great interest in walking and biking trails in a 2020 survey. DORA was then placed on the Parks and Stormwater Sales Tax project list, and in 2021, voters renewed this tax with 79.5% in favor.

How is this being paid for?

The Parks and Stormwater Sales Tax is providing funding for DORA. Additionally, Joplin received a 2023 State Department of Economic Development Local Tourism ARPA grant of $1.5 million to expand the project. As part of a recreational and tourism destination, the $5.8 million park will also be funded with revenues from the Convention and Visitors Bureau’s Hotel/Motel tax.
